Autonomous software A large part of the appeal of blockchain platforms such as Bitcoin and Ethereum comes from the fact that the code underlying the platforms themselves, as well as the applications deployed on them, are autonomous, in the sense that they are partially or fully beyond the control of one person (or any one group of people). Applications on these blockchain platforms are “unstoppable” by design, and are able to function without ongoing human intervention. Once deployed, they are governed by their own code, rather than by people. This allows them to make reliable commitments.
